The Red Barn Family Steakhouse was conceived by Hays & Patricia May. They purchased the old Conoco gas station and created what would become a local landmark. The groundbreaking celebration for the new construction took place in October 1978. Opening June 9, 1979, the Red Barn Family Steakhouse was appropriately named with a covered porch, angled roofline, hayloft doors, decorative wagon wheels, and a prominent silo. Soon it would become a local favorite.

To support their growing Steakhouse, they Mays purchased the Rio Mimbres Ranch in the Mimbres Valley to raise Angus cattle. They were proud to serve Aurora Black Angus beef — the best quality lean tender beef. While we no longer produce our own Angus beef, we are still proud to be the only restaurant in Silver City serving Reserve Angus.

In 1984, the Mays added The Watering Hole for customers who found themselves in need of something to wash away the trail dust. It has become a comfortable favorite hangout for locals.
